What to Look for in a Local Towing Company

There are many good towing companies and many that are dishonest. How do you know which one will not take advantage of you being in a bad situation? Here are some ways you can make sure you are dealing with a scrupulous tow operator.

Request five references

Ask the trailer operator if they can provide you with the names of five people they have done business with in the past. If they can’t or don’t want to do this, you need to be careful. Any good crane company will be happy to provide you with the names of past customers who have been satisfied with the service they provided.

Make sure to call all five. Explain why you are calling and ask if they would ever do business with this particular towing company again. If they say yes, then you know you have a winner.

Ask the people you know

Talk to family, friends, and people you know. Ask them if they have used a crane company that they have felt is extremely fair and trustworthy. Chances are, if they liked you, they will too.

You can search the phone, but a referral from someone you know and trust will assure you that you are dealing with someone who is honest and will not take advantage of you.

Are they licensed, bonded and insured?

Don’t assume they have all three elements. Ask to verify if they do. You need to make sure that if they damage your vehicle, they can afford it. Even more so if your car is expensive. It is no big deal to provide you with proof of these things. In fact, they should be happy, especially in the world we live in.

Have all the charges explained to you

Don’t wait for the final bill to be sent to you before you know everything you are being charged. You must know in writing how much a trailer will cost. Connection fee, mileage, seized storage, and service charge should be factored into the initial estimate. Require everything to be in writing before any car or truck that belongs to you is picked up. Towing companies routinely use the old bait and switch technique to fill the bill and fill their pockets without the customer noticing.
