If you were to ask someone how you could gain weight, most people would say you’re crazy. What you also need to do is figure out how many calories you need to maintain your current body weight. Women need to multiply it by 12; men need to multiply it by 15. The number you get is the number of calories you should consume every day just to maintain the weight you are at, based on your current physical activity.

If you want to gain more weight (say a pound) each week, you should eat an extra 500 calories every day and not increase your level of physical activity. When you exercise more, you’ll need to increase your calorie intake beyond the extra 500 calories, of course.
