Building a strong skin barrier

Building a strong skin barrier is the best defense against sensitivity and irritation. A weak or damaged skin barrier cannot effectively protect and it is this weakness that is the underlying problem in sensitive and problematic skin. Strengthening the skin’s barrier may be the best defense against pollution, UV rays, harsh chemicals, and environmental stressors.

Aging, color (the lighter the skin, the more prone to redness, irritation, etc.), and environmental factors may be reasons why some have a weak barrier. The ability to maintain skin hydration and elasticity are the result of a strong skin barrier. If your skin can’t keep its balance, the result is dry, dull skin. A weak skin barrier also means that chemicals can more easily penetrate the skin and cause inflammation. This is often evident when someone complains that certain products sting or irritate and redden the skin. So what can you do?

*Keep your skincare routine simple. Take a look at the products you use. Get rid of alcohol-based products or witch hazel. Avoid detergents in your cleaning routine. Avoid harsh chemicals of any kind.

*No scrubs, cleaning tools, or excess cleaning (ie brushes, cleaning cloths) are allowed. If you must have a cleaning tool, make sure it feels smooth. Simply put, most of these tools are too hard. Cleaning the face should be gentle at all times.

* Look for ingredients like linoleic acid (Omega 6 fatty acid). We do not make this ingredient naturally and we have to obtain it through diet or topical application. Repairs the skin barrier and is highly moisturizing. Look for oils like hemp seed oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil in your products.

* No detergents! (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). They leave the surface dry, irritated, and SLS disrupts the skin’s natural pH balance. Acids that remove the top layer of skin should also be avoided. Dyes, fragrances, and harsh chemicals are also culprits that contribute to fading.

* Very hot water should be avoided when showering and bathing. Contributes to the elimination of natural oils.

* Play defense! Protects the skin from stressors, such as free radical damage. Look for antioxidants, natural extracts like green tea, vitamins (A, C, and E), and nutrient-dense oils like pomegranate in your products. These help promote a strong skin barrier.

*Stress. See how you handle stress. High levels of stress slow down the ability to heal.

*Diet. Essential fatty acids (Omegas) are beneficial. They help the skin retain water and are anti-inflammatory. The healthier your diet, the stronger your skin will be.

*Sunscreen. Put it on! It is one of the best ways to protect the skin barrier.
