Things to do in Golden City of Jaisalmer

Popularly known as the golden city of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer is most famous for its sand dunes.

Although most people are confined to the sand dunes, there are many things to do in and around Jaisalmer. So I made a list of all the things to do and places to explore here.

1. Jaisalmer Fort

The sprawling Yellow Stone Fort, built by the Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, is located in the center of the city. In the old days, this desert city was only limited to the limits of the Fort. Today, due to the increase in population, the city limits have been extended. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site and perhaps the only “living fort” in the world. Descendants of the royal family and other caste-based communities that assist the ruler continue to live here to this day.

2. Patwon ki Haveli

Havelis or mansions were common in Jaisalmer. Guman Chand Patwa was an affluent banker and minister to the ruler who began building his own mansion but was unable to finish it. Later I ended up with her 5 children and hence the name, Patwon ki Haveli. I think it’s pretty clear why. As soon as you enter the narrow path that leads to the Havelis, you will be puzzled by the complexity of the jharokhas (windows) and heavily carved yellow stone balconies.

3. Lake Gadisar

Just one kilometer from the Amar Pole (Gate) of the Fort, is the Gadhisar Lake. This is another famous tourist spot. You can do many things like boating, feeding the catfish, and visiting the sunset point. Historically, this small lake used to provide water to the entire city of Jaisalmer.

4. Salim Singh ki Haveli

Salim Singh ki haveli is one of the few ancient structures built outside the fortifications. Legend has it that a minister of the kingdom, Salim Singh, had a disagreement with the ruler and decided to build his own haveli further away from the city. The distinctive feature of this Haveli is how the peacock shaped roof has been built. The descendant family still occupies space in this haveli. They provide a guided tour based on contributions that explains interesting things about its history and its people.

5. Sam Sand Dunes

These are the most famous sand dunes just 40-45 kms from Jaisalmer city. In the month of February, camel races can also be seen as part of the Desert Festival that takes place annually. You can opt for the cultural desert camp safari, where you will stay in luxurious tents or temporary cabins. However, to get a richer desert experience, you should try going to the Wild Desert Safari. This takes you deep into the dunes, away from the crowd.
