Safety harnesses for welders

There are many different types of welding jobs and in your career as a welder, you are sure to come across many of them. Some welders work on ships or docks, others work in the automotive industry, and still others work with oil companies on drilling rigs or pipelines. Some welding jobs that a welder performs may require the welder to work in the air. In fact, some jobs require welders to be in the air for extended periods or just a long time generally working in the air. That’s where safety harnesses come in.

Safety harnesses are designed to protect welders from falls from significant heights. They are made of nylon or rope straps that are strained around a welder’s waist and then secured to a strong rope that is either anchored to some stable point or that is secured directly to an anchor point. Anchor points can be something like a sturdy beam or other strong point that won’t buckle under the weight of a welder. There are different types of harnesses available for welders. The type of harness you will need depends on the level of work you will be doing.

If you prefer lightweight safety harnesses, you may want to consider harnesses like the FP Pro Harness, which has hip D-rings and Qwik-Fit buckles. These are very comfortable harnesses and much more comfortable for many welders than other types of harnesses. Some harnesses have chest straps and buckles and other harnesses only have chest straps. You may find that you have a preference as to which type you prefer. Many welders prefer harnesses that have straps and buckles because they feel that these types of harnesses are safer.

Safety harness straps are very important. Most are made from nylon, but that can be a problem for welders because nylon can be flammable and sometimes catches fire from the sparks that are put out by welding. You should always try to protect your harness from any stray flames or sparks. Pay particular attention to the leg, waist, and shoulder straps because this is where most burn damage occurs. Aprons can be worn over the harness and can serve as a barrier between sparks and nylon. Some welders use protective leather pieces that will be placed over the harness straps where they are most vulnerable to help prevent spark damage.

There have been many work-related injuries due to accidents involving welding safety harnesses. Make sure any harness you use meets OSHA standards. One way to make sure your harness is good is to buy it from a reputable source. Badly made harnesses will cause you a lot of trouble. Each harness should come with instructions that are clear and easy to understand and should also have care information.
