How to make felt chicken thighs, fish and burgers

For the past 2 years, I have been making a variety of craft felt play foods for my granddaughter’s kitchen set. All girls love having a variety of foods to use with their play sets, and this three-piece set works up quickly.

These three foods are made from your standard craft felt and the pieces are hand-sewn using blanket stitch and whip stitch. You can make all three pieces in just one afternoon.

Materials needed for the project:

1 Sheet of Felt in each of these colors: dark brown, vanilla and tan.

Embroidery Thread: Dark Brown, Vanilla, and Tan

Filled with polyester fiberfill (about 1/4 of a bag)

Sharp scissors for fabric, embroidery needle and tape measure

Paper template (to use as a pattern)

patterns: one 3″ diameter circle (for hamburger), hand drawn fish shape measuring 4″ long by 2″ wide at its widest point, hand drawn chicken thigh measuring 5″ long by 2 1/4″ wide at is the widest point.

BurgerHow To: Use your 3″ diameter circle pattern and cut two circles from dark brown felt. Cut a strip measuring 3/8″ wide by 10″ long from dark brown felt. Using two strands of dark brown embroidery floss , sew the strip to one of the circles. Once it’s joined, sew the other edge of the strip to the second circle. Just before you finish sewing it, insert some fiberfill and then finish your seam to close it. Finish off your sewing and hide the ends of the floss inside the burger.

Fish steak: Use your hand drawn fish pattern and cut out two of the shapes from vanilla colored felt. Cut a strip that measures 1/4″ around the circumference of your vanilla felt fish. Using two strands of vanilla-colored embroidery floss, sew the strip to one of your fish shapes. the other edge.of the strip to the second shape.Just before finishing the seam, insert some fiberfill and then finish the seam to close it.

Chicken thighHow To: Use your hand-drawn chicken leg pattern and cut out two of the shapes from tan felt. Cut 1 1/2″ off the bone end of your pattern and then use that piece to cut two bone sections out of vanilla colored felt. Using two vanilla colored felt strands, hand stitch the bone section on top of the leg pattern. using small whip stitches. You will repeat this for the other shape. Once they have been joined, use two strands of tan embroidery floss and sew the two chicken leg pieces together, but just before finish, insert some fiberfill, and then finish your seam.

AdviceTip: You’ll always want to hide the ends of your floss inside the piece so they won’t be visible and no knots will show through. Don’t over-tighten the hand stitches or the felt will bunch up. If the parts get dirty from use, they can be hand washed with a little mild detergent.
