Headache and Migraine Relief: Natural Causes and Solutions

I have suffered from headaches and migraines for as long as I can remember. My dad has told me that when I was a baby learning to speak, one of the first things I learned to say was that my head hurt. I grew up taking fairly large amounts of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Motrin) regularly for pain. While I don’t really like putting drugs in my body, when it comes to severe pain, I find myself turning to anything to ease me.

The problem with headaches and migraines is that it is difficult to identify why they occur. Sometimes it is obvious; your head is covered by sinus pressure or you fell and hit your head quite hard. But most of the time, they just crawl on you for a few hours until you finally reach the point where any kind of movement, noise, or bright light feels like a hammer hitting your head.

Years of taking pain relievers have caused liver damage. I do not blame them, because I have chosen many times to put them on my body, and I am sure that I will do it again in the throes of the moment. They help, most of the time, to ease the pain and sometimes we just need to get to the next moment to move on.

But they don’t always help. Truth be told, I haven’t found anything, either medicinal or natural, that completely eliminates my migraines every time. However, I found that by having an arsenal of different potions, one of them is sure to work for whatever type of headache you have right now. Maybe one of these will help you.

Overlooked causes for headaches:

Low blood sugar

High / low blood pressure

Low blood circulation

Sinus congestion headaches

Peppermint oil can be used in many ways.

Peppermint oil # 1

The simplest is to put a few drops in the palm of your hand, place it on your mouth and nose, and take several deep breaths. This helps congestion.

Peppermint oil # 2

I usually apply peppermint oil directly to my scalp, right where the pain is. Where it hurts the most is where I apply it. But I’ll also put some in the palm of my hand and apply a little to my fingertip to apply above the eyebrows, behind the ears, across the jaw, and all over the neck.

Be careful not to get it in your eyes or use that finger to rub your eyes later. If you get a little bit, just scoop out some vegetable oil and dab it gently on the burned area. It will stop the burning almost instantly.

Peppermint oil # 3

I know people who have gotten rid of a headache with a single drop of peppermint oil on the back of their neck. It hasn’t worked for me, but I’ve met too many people it has worked for to be skeptical.

Peppermint oil # 4

Mix a drop of peppermint oil with your shampoo and then again with your conditioner. The foam helps the oil spread easily throughout the head. The tingling feels so good I don’t want to rinse it off. This feels good even when you don’t have a headache, but if you do, it just feels heavenly.

Peppermint oil # 5

Inhale it: rub into the tip of the nose, breathe deeply. Apply clean to forehead and temples, cheekbones, bridge of nose, and around ears.

Roman chamomile oil

Apply to each point on the face and neck, basically where you feel sinus pressure. This has never helped me, personally, but we are all made differently.

Low blood sugar

Check your blood sugar level. If you are between 60 and 70, you may develop a slight headache. If you are between 50 and 60, you are more likely to have a total headache, feel weak, tired, and irritable. My best friend gets a headache every time her blood sugar drops. As for me, he is lucky, because as soon as he eats, the headache goes away.

Migraines and liver

Using the theory that migraines are related to the liver, target the liver and head areas on your feet. Apply a few drops of Valor essential oil all over the foot, paying special attention to the back of the big toes, rubbing it hard. Rub a drop or two of M-Grain on the back of the big toes and on the nail bed. The point of the brain is on the big toe.

The liver point is on the right foot. If it finds the center of your foot (not including your toes) and moves to where you step, that’s where it rubs. I also rub a drop of M-Grain here, rubbing it rhythmically for a few minutes. It is easier to rub with a few drops of olive oil.

Then massage the M-Grain point on liver 3, which is at the top of the foot along the way from the big toe to the ankle. Run a finger between those bones, rubbing the oil.

Chemical headache

Toxins from chemicals, such as paint fumes, can cause headaches. Breathing an essential oil, such as peppermint oil, can help restore balance. Diffusing the oil is particularly effective here.

Dilated blood vessels

Caffeine constricts the blood vessels. Sometimes just drinking some coffee or Coke can help with a migraine.

Other things to try:

Fresh wheatgrass juice

Fresh celery juice

Thieves Essential Oil Blend

Put a drop on your thumb and press on the roof of the mouth

Lavender oil and peppermint oil

Apply a drop of lavender oil to the temples and neck. Put a layer of peppermint oil on top of the lavender. Sometimes the combination is stronger than an individual.

Grapefruit oil

By itself, it does nothing for me. However, when I place it on top of other oils, it intensifies the effect of the other oils.

Here is another recipe for pain. [http://www.healthyaromas.com/pain_control.php], usually. But this one could knock you out, so don’t take it unless you’re home and can rest. Valerian is classified as a mild tranquilizer and has a sedative effect on the body. It’s called “Nature’s Valium” for a reason.

20 drops of valerian oil

10 drops of Helichrysum oil

3 drops of clove oil

3 drops of peppermint oil

Fill an empty capsule or two, depending on the size of the capsule, with these oils and swallow with a glass of water.
