Books a CAT Aspiring Must Read: Tips for CAT Online 2010

Every year the Common Admission Test or CAT is carried out throughout the country for admission to the various MBA programs offered by business schools. CAT turns out to be one of the most difficult exams in India, with only 1% of candidates eventually making it to the reputed business schools. Therefore, it is very important to study hard and read the best CAT books to get good grades in the exam.

As you all know, the CAT exam is divided into three main sections: Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation, and Verbal Ability. Depending on these three sections, I have provided the names of 3 books that an aspiring CAT must read.

For quantitative ability, you need a lot of practice in level 10 and 12 math. The best books to refer to are ICSE Maths Text Book by OP Sinhal and Quantitative aptitude by RS Aggarwal. Aggarwal’s book is also available online. CAT hopefuls can also purchase the NCERT books for standards 9-12 and work from there. Since most of the students are afraid of math, practicing 10 and 12 levels of arithmetic and algebra will help them get high marks in the exam. To give your CAT preparations an extra boost, you can always refer to M. Tyra’s Magical Book on Quicker Maths.

For Logical Reasoning and Interpreting Data, the best books include Interpreting Data and Logical Reasoning for CAT by Arun Sharma. The book published by Tata McGraw-Hill offers an easy and enjoyable read for all aspiring CATs. The book presents very clearly the answer to the key question that many of you have in mind. Many of the logical reasoning books can also be ordered online.

To understand the verbal ability, you can buy Wren and Marten. To further practice grammar, that is, the use of nouns, idioms and phrases, you can purchase “A Practical English Grammar” by Thompson and Martinet.

English usage and vocabulary can be further sharpened by reading “Word Power Made Easy” by Norman Lewis. Inside the book you will find around 50 exercises to solve. While reading, if you don’t understand the meaning of some words, always refer to an English dictionary like Oxford to understand the word.

The book called “How to Prepare for CAT Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension” by Arun Sharma and Meenakshi Upadhyay will also greatly help CAT aspirants to prepare for the upcoming exam.

According to CAT experts, it is best for students to read various newspapers and magazines in English, in addition to studying the books that should be read first, to improve English language skills.

MBA aspirants can also read some of the following books to get an idea about various topics in management.

• Marketing Management: Knowledge and Skills – Peter and Donnelly

• Financial management – Khan & Jain

• Mathematics for Business Studies – Dr. JK Thukral
