This is because you will find the most popular keywords to be extremely competitive and ranking well for them is very difficult. So you may need to rely on the next best ones while still trying to get top keywords.

Search engines believe that an inbound link is a vote of confidence in what you have on that page, so the page is assumed to be important. Posting articles on directory websites also allows you to get back links and this is a good way to improve your link popularity.
