As the second oldest university city in the world, Cambridge offers a student experience that is truly unique. Whether punting down the River Cam or exploring the city’s many museums, there is plenty to keep you entertained and inspired during your time here. The city also boasts a range of restaurants and pubs, and its student population ensures that the town is always buzzing with life and energy.

If you’re interested in living in gender inclusive Cambridge student accommodation, there is an option available when applying for your college room. You can check the box on your housing application stating that you would like to live with other students who have requested gender inclusive housing. You will then be assigned to a house with other students who have made the same request, regardless of your biological sex or gender.

In addition to gender inclusive Cambridge student accommodation, the campus also offers theme and interest floors in select buildings. These floors are designed for students with common interests to have the opportunity to meet and collaborate. This is a great way to make friends with people who may have similar interests and build a community that supports your academic and social life.

The city’s Human Rights Commission is also working to ensure that local businesses understand and comply with a state law that bans discrimination on the basis of gender identity. The law says that all people have the right to use sex-segregated facilities that “comply with their sincerely held gender identity.”

You can read more about this on the Human Rights Commission’s website, which includes resources for transgender individuals. The site also has information and forms to help you change your Massachusetts driver’s license, state ID card, passport or birth certificate to reflect your gender identity.

Student accommodation provides a platform to engage in volunteer and community service activities. Volunteer work can enhance your skills, broaden your perspective, and create a positive impact. By actively participating in volunteer and community service opportunities, you develop a sense of social responsibility and contribute to the betterment of society.

The City Council approved a policy order this month that calls for the addition of a third gender category — “X” – on birth certificates issued in the city, while allowing those who don’t identify with the gender they were assigned at birth to amend their birth certificate without jumping through certain administrative hoops. However, the plan still needs approval from the state legislature and the city solicitor’s office. The City Council will be reviewing the proposal again at its meeting on Jan. 23. If it passes, the ordinance would go into effect in March of 2020.
