Five virtues of friendship

Given the radical changes that have plunged our world into a technology-driven society, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between a true friendship and an acquaintance. However, building trust and true friendship is not impossible and it serves us well in times of need and joy. Having friends because they are rich or have the potential to be rich is not true friendship. Having friends for the sole purpose of being a means to an end is not friendship. Even for business purposes, it is essential to have certain factors in our relationships to ensure we keep true friends that we can support and receive support in return.

1. Patience

Patience is the foundation of any relationship. It is the de facto attribute for gaining trust and understanding. Without patience, no true friendship can last. Patience in friendship means tolerance, it means forgiveness, it means being able to overlook certain shortcomings while we wait for our friends. Patience is a way of giving without passing on a physical gift. Patience is an investment for a long-term reward. The fruits of patience in any relationship are rarely noticed until after an extended period of time.

2. Honesty

No true friendship could survive without both people being honest with each other. As difficult as it may be in certain circumstances, the truth is always the best way to go. It may hurt, but this is what you want in friendship. Without this, eventually this friendship will end in disaster. Honesty builds trust and loyalty.

3. Humility

Friendship without humility is a waste of time. Humility means that both parties would be willing to admit if they are wrong in a time of conflict. Humility also means that both parties can listen to and accept your advice.

4. Give

In every friendship there must be some form of giving, be it physical, spiritual or otherwise. It is the nature of this association. Even tolerating someone else’s flaws is a form of generosity. This also means being happy about a friend’s success and not just our own. Giving also shows loyalty. Loyalty means being side by side in good and bad. However, it must be done honestly. If this is done correctly then you are giving.

5. Balance

All friendship must have balance to survive. One person cannot give all the time while another receives. This kind of friendship never lasts. There are always complaints, either verbally or mentally noted. Balance lays the foundation for judging friendship fairly. Eradicate envy and jealousy.

If these five factors are met in any friendship, it will surely grow and last.
