Catering equipment: different types of spoons

In the world of restaurants and food there are many types of equipment for the hotel industry and cutlery is one of these categories. Cutlery is usually taken for granted in everyday food preparation, but it makes up a huge part of this process and we just can’t live without it. In this article, I will take a look at the different types of spoons and what their uses are.

These are different types.

  • Solid serving spoon. This piece of cutlery has a solid spoon and usually has a stainless steel base. It is used to serve rice, stews, curries and vegetables.

  • Perforated serving spoon. This item has a scoop that is perforated, in other words it has small circular holes. This allows you to serve vegetables that are submerged in water. For example, food is usually boiled in water, so these cutlery make it easier and safer to remove food from boiling water.

  • Spoon to stir. This item is ideal for stirring foods such as stews or curries. You are allowed to mix the ingredients as much as you need. This cutlery is usually made of plastic or wood and is used daily in food preparation.

  • Spoon sideboard. These are made from a sturdier material, like shatter-resistant polycarbonate, so they can stand up to the demands of a busy buffet station. They are designed with a wider base for easy removal of food from the buffet plate. They can also withstand high temperatures.

  • Solid basting spoon. This catering equipment is ideal for basting. It has a solid spoon that is perfect for holding liquids. Once you have made your basting sauce, you would use this item to scoop out the sauce and pour it over the chicken or meat you are preparing. This cutlery comes with different handle lengths for your convenience. Some of them have a hole at the end so you can hang it on a wall.

  • Perforated basting spoon. you can use this catering equipment for straining or draining braised, poached, or seared foods. You can easily remove the mushrooms from the pan without the remaining liquid that resulted from cooking them.

Cutlery is often an underrated type of catering equipment, spoons even more so. When planning your meal prep, it’s always a good idea to make sure you have the necessary catering equipment on hand to make the process that much easier and more convenient.
