Anol lizards: how to buy and transport your new pet home

Anole lizards as pets

Anole lizards, sometimes called American chameleons or simply anoles, are a great choice as a pet. They do not require a lot of space and are easy to care for. Anoles are an especially good option for people who may have pet allergies or who cannot exercise their pets.

Native to the southeastern United States, these little reptiles are fascinating to watch. They will literally change color before your eyes and have unique little personalities. Normally shy creatures, most will come to know their owner’s voice and will happily rest on your fingers and hands.

How to buy an anole

You’ll find these vivid reptiles for sale at most large pet stores. They usually cost less than ten dollars.

You can buy one or more than one, as long as you have a large-sized terrarium. We recommend at least a 20 gallon terrarium, preferably a larger one. They are a solitary species carving out their own territory in the wild, so don’t feel the need to buy more than one for company.

Look for a live, active lizard that appears to have a healthy weight and temperament. Males are slightly larger than females and may have more skin under the throat, commonly known as a double chin.

The main precaution is not to house two males together. They will be enemies and they will fight, and one will inevitably be scared and sulking. Females housed together will not pose any problem.

Bringing your pet home

The trip home will be one of the most stressful times in an anole’s life. Make sure you don’t run other errands. Bring your pet straight home and have your terrarium all set up and ready to go.

If you buy your pet in winter, make sure your vehicle is adequately heated. The pet store will likely place the lizard in a large plastic airbag, secured at the top. Take them straight home and gently deposit them in their new terrarium.

Don’t be alarmed if they run around frantically for the first few minutes. This is stressful for them, but they will soon calm down and start exploring more calmly. We recommend gently spraying the interior of the terrarium just before they enter, in case they are thirsty. They will lick the water droplets off the twigs, branches and rocks that you have used to decorate their home.

Feed your pet after a few hours. By then, they will be somewhat acclimated to their environment. Don’t worry if they don’t eat right away. It may take a day or two to adjust and get comfortable.

Summary

Anole lizards make excellent pets, so get off to a good start. Choose a healthy sample that appears robust and active. Bring them straight home from the pet store and have your terrarium ready to go ahead of time. Lastly, give them time to adjust to their new surroundings and become completely comfortable with their new home.
