Magento 1 is far from dead

Online sellers who built their businesses on Magento version 1.X can vouch for the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of this eCommerce platform.

After all, they would not have been able to list products and manage orders as well as payments in their online stores and various marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay from a single screen had it not been for the extensive features of Magento 1.

So when word got out that the version would no longer receive support and updates, it put many vendors into panic mode.

It’s a good thing Magento stepped in quickly to prevent such baseless information from demoralizing their customers.

Ongoing support for Magento 1

Contrary to rumours, Magento has no plans to end support for version 1.X any time soon and force its users to upgrade to Magento 2.

They made that very clear in a blog post they published on their official blog last month.

If your online store is still firmly anchored to Magento 1, rest easy and continue with your daily activities, as it will be another 18 months before the implementation of the new Magento support system.

That means version 1 will continue to receive security updates until Magento has formally announced its new support rules.

Here is an excerpt from the blog post by Jason Woosley, SVP of Products and Technology at Magento:

“Magento stands behind our customers and will never leave a customer behind, you can rest assured that we have your back at all times. Magento 1 has been and will continue to be supported for the foreseeable future. We have no intention of denying access to our class software and knows your business relies on Magento to drive growth and brand differentiation.”

Are you ready for Magento 2?

While making sure to encourage Magento 1 users, Woosley found an opportunity in his article to push his company’s new flagship product, Magento 2, which he was warned not to update due to its premature release in 2015.

Woosley wrote that version 2 has the ability to improve the performance of a website, giving it better visibility and business results.

There is no doubt that Magento 2 will be the most in-demand eCommerce platform over time, which could be three years or so from now.

However, unless the security bug detected by DefenseCode and other undocumented features in version 2 have been successfully fixed, we believe that users of version one will delay their migration a bit longer.

What do you think about the extended life of Magento 1 and its successor?
