The park

Keoladeo Ghana National Park, popularly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is situated in the Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. It is one of the best bird sanctuaries in India and famous among tourists for its exceptional wetland bird sanctuary. It is a man-made wetland that was created under the kind instructions of Maharaja Bharatpur in the 19th century. It is one of the best bird sanctuaries in Asia. The reserve was declared a national park in 1982. In 1985, it entered the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This fabulous bird reserve covers an area of ​​approximately 29 square kilometers and is only 2 km from the Bharatpur township. It has a rich variety of flora and fauna.

Flora

Flora commonly seen in the park are Babul trees, various aquatic plants with many Kadam trees, and grasslands. Apart from this, the park comprises a diverse variety of flora that are the best nesting places for numerous species of birds and consists of 64 families, 181 genera and 227 subspecies.

Fauna

In addition to a wide variety of birds, the park is known for its varied variety of mammals such as sambar, chital, nilgai (blue bull) and wild boar.

Bird-fauna

In its 29 m2. km in area, the sanctuary nurtures more than 375 species of birds, including numerous migratory birds. A large number of migratory birds include various species of cranes, pelicans, geese, ducks, eagles, larks, and hawks, to name a few. Immigrants generally come from Siberia and Central Asia.

By train:

Bharatpur Railway Station is the nearest railway station at a distance of 6 km. It is well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Agra and Jaipur by regular train services.

By air:

Agra airport is the nearest airport at a distance of 56 km.

By highway:

An excellent road network links the city of Bharatpur with other major cities in Rajasthan and neighboring states.

The best season to go:

The period of the month from October to November is the most ideal to visit the park. During this period a large number of migratory birds arrive here. The sanctuary can be visited between the months of August and November and several resident birds can be observed.

Note: The park is open all year round, but the best time to visit is between August and November.

Temperature range: The temperature range may vary due to climate change.

Winter temperature: In winter the temperature can drop up to 10 degrees C.

Summer temperature: In summer, the usual temperature range is 38 to 45 degrees C.

Never forget that you are in the forest to visit and observe the animals in their natural habitat and do not disturb them during this effort of yours.

Avoid carrying cell phones in the park or keep them on Vibrate/Silent mode. It is best to turn it off during the course of your visit because strange sounds, such as those from cell phones, can disturb or irritate wildlife.

Avoid the use and abandonment of combustible substances in the Park.

With an idea to observe wildlife in a better way, don’t get too close. Do not try to make friends with the wild animals of the Park.

The Forest is home to various wild animals and it is best not to litter around the Forest.

Always carry insect and mosquito repellent creams, antiseptic creams, band-aids, a bottle of water, a first aid kit, a small flashlight, personal hygiene products, raincoats, and the like.

Be prepared with a good camera and stock up on extra film so you can capture the best wildlife moves. But never use strong flash lights and consult the forest guide before taking photos or recording videos.

Wear sunglasses, sunscreen, and sun hats as they protect you from the sun’s harsh rays and prevent sunburn.

It is also advisable to wear comfortable shoes covered with socks instead of floats and fancy shoes.

Stick to your guide and group at all times.
