How to successfully homeschool a new puppy

Do you have a new puppy in your house that needs to be house trained? House training can be a daunting task, and just like potty training 2-year-olds, it takes time and effort to be successful. However, the more you put into effectively house training your puppy, the sooner you will see positive working results. Here are some tips for successfully and thoroughly training your new puppy.

First, there are a few things to keep in mind before you begin this training journey. First, if you don’t see your dog doing something on his floor, don’t punish him. If you tell them “no” and show them your mess, chances are they won’t understand why you’re upset with them. Second, be sure to praise them lavishly (and maybe even give them a treat) when they do well. This encourages your pup to do things out of incentive, not out of confused fear.

Many people prefer to start potty training their puppies indoors. A good way to start is to lay old newspapers on the floor and place a disposable puppy pad on top. These pads are full of chemicals that encourage your pup to relieve herself on the pad. For starters, once you see your pup going through his pre-handling routine (i.e. sniffing the ground and walking around like he’s looking for something), simply pick him up and place him on the platform, remembering to praise him when he’s done.

Once your pup has started using puppy pads consistently, you’ll want to place a puppy pad both outside and inside. This way the pup will recognize the pad on the outside and use it as a toilet just like the pads on the inside. Once your pup becomes familiar with pottying herself indoors and outdoors, he will begin to move the indoor puppy pad closer and closer to the front or back door of your house. Once he reaches the door, he goes ahead and removes the inner puppy pad. This way, your puppy will have gotten used to going to the door when he needs to relieve himself. Be sure to notice when your puppy goes to the door, otherwise this could confuse him. Once your dog starts heading in the right direction, open the door and lead him to the outdoor pup platform.

Finally, once your dog has gotten used to going to the door when he needs relief and wants to get out, remove the last outdoor puppy pad. Now your dog has been successfully trained to head for the door and out when he needs to relieve himself.

However, one last thing to remember is that your pup will have accidents from time to time. Make sure you don’t punish them unless you catch them in the act, because they won’t understand your frustration because they just don’t remember doing it. Also, it’s always helpful to praise when your pup starts out. Dogs understand when they do something right. Good luck puppy house training!
