How to replicate the natural environment for your turtle

Ideally, the terrarium should replicate the environment your tortoise would have in the wild. This article discusses how to provide turtles with the most suitable living environment.

Space requirements

Space is probably the most important factor when it comes to your pet’s comfort. In the case of a tortoise, space requirements should be decided considering the size and habits of your tortoise. Some tortoises do not grow very large, while others grow to extraordinary sizes. Similarly, some tortoises are not very active, while others like to climb, explore, dig, and dig. Therefore, it is important to understand your turtle’s growth habit and characteristics before planning to make or purchase a terrarium.

Hide boxes and substrate

A couple of important factors that contribute to giving your turtle a natural environment are leather boxes and substrate. The substrate is the soil your tortoise will live in and leather boxes give your tortoise a sense of security. There are many different types of substrates to choose from. Sanitized litter, pet rugs, artificial pebbles, and mulch-style mixes are the most popular. The substrate should complement the needs of your turtle. Turtles generally like to have pebble substrates, but it is nice to have different substrates in different parts of the terrarium. The rock and sand substrates provide a good basking area for the turtle due to its ability to retain heat.

Keep at the right temperature

Many people believe that because reptiles are cold-blooded animals, keeping them at high temperatures is healthier. It’s a misperception: being cold-blooded means you can’t adjust your body temperature internally. Therefore, your terrarium must provide a suitable temperature range for the turtle. Turtles are comfortable moving between cold and warm areas. To have your terrarium in both cold and warm areas you can heat one of its portions

Sunbathing lamps and heating pads are ideal sources of heat and, when used in combination, will give your turtle a more natural feel. For terrariums that are kept in places where the weather is generally cold, buried heating pads will be more effective.

Have a drainage system to keep the terrarium clean and healthy.

In terrariums that are installed in aquatic or tropical environments, the substrate can sometimes become flooded. A soggy substrate can rot or begin to break down. Replacing the substrate can be a costly undertaking that can be avoided with a proper drainage system. Gravel, false bottom and lightweight expanded clay aggregates are some of the systems that can be incorporated into the terrarium.
