Can Housework Be Dangerous During Pregnancy?

While pregnant moms tend to do weird things like eat, do things on a whim, pregnant women are always given specific instructions on housework. There are many tasks that are not safe for moms. You will have to stop doing them altogether. No safe limits have been set in weightlifting, they are not allowed.

You will have to deal with back strain from carrying your baby in the womb as your body’s center of gravity changes. And if you lift weight while holding the baby, or doing the shopping, moving the gas cylinder or the heavy furniture, this will put your back under pressure. When working with chemicals like cleaning products, remember to wear gloves. Make sure the room is ventilated and try to use safe cleaners like baking soda and vinegar. Wear gloves while washing dishes and while vacuuming can be very strenuous as the filter contains dust, spores, and hair that will get into your lungs and eyes. Do not clean the cat litter. Wash vegetables well before eating. They can be contaminated with chemicals, soil contaminated by wild animals or pets.

Tasks that require scaling and balancing are not recommended. Don’t climb on stools, stairs, or reach out to grab things from a kitchen loft, shelf, or cupboard. Otherwise you may be agile, but during pregnancy you may not be your usual self and fall off. Ask your maid or close relative to help you clean ceiling fans, windows, mirrors, change light bulbs, electrical accessories for which you can call an electrician.

If you sleep on the floor, ask a family member to help you pick up the mattress, bedspread, and bedding. Folding and picking things up will affect your back. Washing clothes, scrubbing the floor, it all affects the back. Squat down instead of bending over to get things done.

Also try not to stand for too long. Pick up a chair and sit at the table or near a television to chop your vegetables. Take a break and then complete your work. Try and prepare dishes that don’t require you to stand for long.
